The Romans, before the first and second century B.C., founded for strategic and military reasons the town of Tridentum, meaning "three teeth", so called because Trento was built in the middle of three small mounts, Calisio, Celva and Verrucca, overlooking the city. Trough the centuries, this town changed many hands, until Henry II, Emperor of the Roman Holy Empire, deliberated in 1004 to grant all temporal power to the bishops. So far, in the 15th century, Trento held the most important Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, known as "Councilium of Trento", who started in 1545 and ended in 1572 . Some princebishops, like Bernard Clesio and Cristopher Madruzzo, heads of the Pincipality, embellished Trento with wonderful frescoed houses and castles.
But general Napoleone Bonaparte, who in 1796 invaded Trento and Trentino with his troups, brought the Episcopal Principality to an end. Some years later the Principality was annexed to the Austro Hungarien Empire. And when in 1918 the imperial austro-hungaric trooups were defeated in the First World War, Trentino and Suedtirol were annexed to the Italian Kingdom.
